Overview of CGS
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to  religious formation for children based on the premise that there is a deep bond between God and the child which produces in the child a desire to draw near to God, and that the growth of this relationship should be assisted by the adult, but is ultimately directed by the Spirit of God within the child.  All Saints started using this approach to Faith Formation for 3-6 year olds with a class of 6 children in 2005.  In 2008, we began to offer the second level of CGS to children who have already been enrolled in the program, and we are poised to offer Level III in the fall of 2010 for our 4th graders.
Three Levels
There are three levels of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd beginning with the Level I atrium for the 3-6 year old child.  The Level I work revolves around the Parable of the Good Shepherd.  Children spend three years enjoying and nurturing a relationship with the Good Shepherd.  Many are deeply affected by the endless love of the Shepherd for his sheep.
Level II work revolves around the image of the True Vine.  This level is for children ages 6-9.  Moral parables offer guidelines for the children who are now receiving two sacraments: First Reconciliation and First Communion.  This age group also explores the History of the Kingdom of God focusing on the history of salvation from Creation through Redemption to Parousia.
Level III work focuses more deeply on the Plan of God in history as one that links people of all times and places together in communion.  Discussions in this 9-12 or 13 year old atrium center around the child’s place in the Kingdom of God.  Moral development is continued at this level as well.
How to be a Catechist
Catechist certification in each level of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd entails completion of a 90-hour formation course, beginning with Level I. To make certification more accessible for local catechists, Shepherd’s Staff, a local board of CGS trained catechists has periodically hosted these courses for Levels I-III. For information about upcoming trainings, please visit their website here: www.cgsiowa.org.
Other ways to assist CGS at All Saints
At All Saints, we highly recommend a year of observation--assisting in the atrium--as a discernment process for entering formation as a catechist.  There are some people who choose to remain in this role and many who go on to be trained.
We are always on the lookout for parishioners to help with woodworking, sewing, painting, sculpting, coloring, and even cutting! If you are interested in helping, please contact our Faith Formation director. mandie@dmallsaints.org
